Many pieces I produce are the result of painting and reworking the same canvas many times over until I feel I can recognize the energy I aim to capture. Sometimes effort alone is not enough to determine what a piece is missing, and it is left to hang around my studio until I see it in new light and the missing piece of my vision falls into place.
The collection here today is comprised of paintings for which that moment did not come easily. Each time I looked at them, I felt they were bound by the edges of their canvas. In a recent moment of inspiration, I recognized the only way to free them and myself from that feeling was to physically cut, rip and tear them from their confinement. Through this process I discovered that they were incomplete because they had not yet found each other. Turns out they were much “Better Together.”
The Better Together Series was created using incomplete paintings from 2018 to 2022.
